Rope tighteners are made from a range of materials: plastics, general metals, stainless steel (including 304 stainless), cast aluminum, and hardened steel alloys (noted as 40Cr).

Common fit ranges shown are 2–5 mm (about 1/16"–3/16"), 3–9 mm (about 1/8"–3/8"), and a smaller tightener listed at roughly 3–6 mm. Always match the product's listed fit range to your cord diameter before buying.

Listed strength figures vary by model and include working load limits of 100 lb, 150 lb, and 250 lb; a turnbuckle capacity of 220 lb (noted as 100 kg); and a listed break strength of 300 lb.

Cam-style devices use a cam mechanism and a carabiner clip to feed and hold a cord so you can pull to tension without tying knots; they typically release tension using a quick-release or rotating lever on the cam.

Examples of listed measurements include plastic tensioner hole size 3 mm × 2.6 mm, metal adjuster hole diameter 6 mm, a metal adjuster dimension of about 4.9 × 1.5 cm (1.9" × 0.6"), and turnbuckles with open/closed lengths of about 5 7/8" to 8 7/16".
