A: If you measure from the very outside yes they measure 2 3/4" I find that quart mayo jars lids fit well and measuring those lids they are very close to 2 3/4"

We recommend to not tighten the lids and use Wide Mouth jars that are the easiest to get the starter in/out of the jar. We also recommend not using a metal utensil as this could compromise the jar and cause breakage.
