Su composición parece inspirada en un célebre naufragio ocurrido en 1609 cerca de las Bermudas. El pasaje, que se creía muerto, se salvó y vivió durante un tiempo en una isla paradisíaca. En pleno debate sobre el descubrimiento y la colonización del Nuevo Mundo, Shakespeare aborda en su obra los problemas de la relación con otras culturas y las perspectivas de convivencia o sometimiento; el encuentro del civilizado con el salvaje; lo primario e instintivo frente a lo racional; la posibilidad de crear una comunidad con un nuevo orden social basado en otros valores, y los obstáculos para llevarlo a cavo.
Pero La tempestad es, también, una reflexión extrema sobre los límites entre ficción y realidad.

Inagotable en posibilidades escénicas, en ella dejó Shakespeare su última palabra sobre la magia del teatro. Traducción de Ängel-Luis Pujante, que recibió por esta obra el premio Nacional a la Mejor Traducción en 1998.
