Q: How can the reviews be so good when all my plants are doing poorly in this soil? I grow flowers and veggies every year with great success but not with this soil a complete failure.

submitted by Elisa - 3 years ago
  • A: Hi Elisa! We are sorry to hear your plants are not thriving, but we are here to help. Please email us photos of your plants to contact@backtotheroots.com, we are here to help you grow. Have you given your plants any fertilizer?

submitted byBack to the Roots, Inc. - 3 years ago
    Brand expert
  • A: Soil needs to be replenished often with fertilizers in order to sustain a healthy crop of veggies/plants/etc. In addition to adding a balanced all purpose fertilizer, I’d recommend adding blood meal, bone meal, kelp amendments, any type of fish poop amendments, along with langbeinite and mycorrhizae fungi for optimal root health. Happy Gardening!

Q: Is this soil supposed to produce actual mushrooms? I potted this indoors and their are mushroom popping up everywhere.

submitted by Kay - 1 year ago
  • A: I also had a ton of mushrooms pop up. I changed to a different brand of soil and no more mushrooms, so it wasn’t “the environment.”

submitted byNatalie - 1 year ago
  • A: Hi Kay! Please send a photo of your soil and the mushrooms to contact@backtotheroots.com. We'd love to take a look to better assist you. While the presence of the mushrooms themselves isn't a bad thing, they can be a signal that something else is not quiet right. As mushrooms thrive in moist, humid environments, their appearance could suggest that the potting media is too moist and the plant is potentially being overwatered. Check the potting media and adjust your watering if necessary. If you're sure the levels are ok, then the mushrooms are a bonus - they can improve the quality of the potting mix and help with the plant's nutrient intake.

    Don't bother.

Shocked to find that this is actually a bag of much. Do not waste your money! Also have gnats in my garden room now as I attempted to us this to transfer my seedlings.

Hi Sheri! We're sorry to hear you've had this experience. Fungus gnats are common with all organic soils, but this does not sound standard for ours. Please send a photo of the soil itself and photos of the full front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com. We look forward to hearing from you and making this right.

    Bag of sticks

This is mulch, not soil. I am so annoyed that I essentially purchased a bag of twigs, and a large proportion of them are really big. Also very buggy--fungus gnats are really difficult to eradicate. Never again!

    smells bad, has bugs

This soil smells really bad, it had mushrooms growing insdie the bag, and it had live bugs in it.
1 reply from Back to the Roots, Inc. team - 12 days ago
Hello! We're sorry to hear about the odor and the bugs — the mushrooms are a sign of biologically active soil. Please send a photo of the soil itself and photos of the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com. We'd love to take a look and send a replacement as needed.

Plant Killer in a Bag: Gnat Gnat Infestation and Sour, Waterlogged Soil

Avoid this soil at all costs! I purchased this for my indoor houseplants and it has been a disaster from day one. Pests & Quality: The bag was completely gnat-infested. Upon opening, I also found an unacceptable amount of large bark chunks and wood filler that hadn't been properly broken down. I took a chance on it, and I deeply regret it. Poor Drainage: About one week in, the soil began to smell sour (anaerobic) and stayed waterlogged far too long. Even after I skipped waterings to let it dry out, the soil wouldn't drain properly. Plant Health: I gave my plants plenty of time to overcome normal transplant shock, but 4 weeks later, every single plant I used this in was dying. I had to do an emergency repot with a different brand just to save them. The roots were suffocating in this muck. Do not risk your plants on this!"

The worst mulch, I mean potting soil, ever

This is the worst potting soil mix I've even seen. It appears the main ingredient is wood; it looks like mulch that smells like fertilizer. I tried to use it because it's all I had on hand and the water pools on top then goes straight through. I've never bought and returned potting soil before but I might this time.

Is this supposed to be mulch??

This can hardly be called soil. It is mostly wood chips and other large fibers. It works for one of my planters that I need some higher drainage, and can mix with my other soil, but I’m going to have to return the other bag. This is incredibly disappointing.

Infested with gnats, saw in soil after 3 days!

INFESTED WITH FUNGUS GNATS. Soooooo bad I had to dump all 6 plants and buy traps which costs $20 each!!! DON’T USE INDOORS! I am still trying to get gnats out of my house… I didn’t see any signs of the bugs, when I opened.. but after 3 days, ALL 6 pots have infestation. I wish I could pick zero stars!

Do yourself a favor and do not buy this soil. My entire house and all my plants are infested with fungus gnats now. I have never had this problem until I bought this soil. Their plant food also is terrible and causes a moldy growth on the top of the soil after using it. Never buying anything from this brand again.

Hi Sydney! We're sorry to hear you have had this experience. Fungus gnats are common with all organic potting mixes, but we would love to hear from you and make this right. Please email us photos of the full front and back of the bag, and photos of the growth on the soil after using the plant food, to contact@backtotheroots.com. What you're describing sounds like mycelial growth, which is beneficial to the plants, and grows when the soil does not have adequate sunlight, but we'd love to take a look to better assist.

    DO NOT BUY

Bag is filled with gnats. Threw the bag away after purchasing, my home is now a mess as I deal with the gnats. I don't recommend buying the brand. I had purchased a smaller bag in the past and it was fine, but this big bag is the worst. wish I could return it.

    Large pieces of bark

Unsure why this has such good reviews. There are large pieces of bark in this. I use potting soil every year for starting seeds, but this stuff is horrible. It watered in 5 times and it still won't absorb water. The water just runs through. We shall see how the seeds do, but I don't have high hopes. I also saw little bugs crawling in it.
