Like most water-based markers, they rely on gravity to feed ink to the tip, so when held upside down (tip above the barrel), the ink flow can become inconsistent or stop altogether. A better option if using upside down would be a pressurized Ink marker such as permanent markers. However, these tend not to be the greatest for detailed art.
