About the Book

"Age of Miracles meets The Immortalists in this spirit-lifting, high-concept blockbuster debut set in a world where people can find out how much time they have left to live"--

Book Synopsis

The Midnight Library meets The Immortalists in this spirit-lifting, high-concept blockbuster debut.

Would you choose to know how long you'll live?

It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out.

But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live.

From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?

As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they'll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?

The Measure charts the dawn of this new world through an unforgettable cast of characters whose decisions and fates interweave with one another: best friends whose dreams are forever entwined, pen pals finding refuge in the unknown, a couple who thought they didn't have to rush, a doctor who cannot save himself, and a politician whose box becomes the powder keg that ultimately changes everything.

Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

Dont waste your time.

the plot could be good but it lacks execution as another reader has said. It drags on, theres a lack of quality character development and it becomes down right depressing instead of thought provoking or enlightening, as it could be reasonably expected to be based on the premise.

Interesting concept, mediocre execution

The concept was interesting (I’ve read similar short stories), but I didn’t love any of the characters, & they were all very similar and felt like versions of the same person, like the author inserting her personality into different people. The middle to end dragged on after you get over the initial uniqueness of the plot; the very end was decent, but from 50-95% was just okay. It’s also politically charged and seems designed to spur further divisiveness, by painting one side as the blatant villain in the story. I don’t like books with political agendas (on either side), so that was another turn off. The overall writing was just okay, nothing exceptional, I never felt super drawn in or invested in the story or the characters. It’s fine if you just want something mildly interesting to read, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it.

Did NOT enjoy it

The farther you get into the book, the more difficult it gets to wade through the leftist author's political superiority complex. Her portrayal of the entire Midwestern portion of the United States as nothing more than greedy, gun-toating, nut jobs is insulting and shows that she is out of touch with a large portion of her would-be readers. This is unfortunate considering the basis of the plot is actually quite good. It's too bad she chooses to blindly insult a large swath of the country's population, showing that she is both out of touch with reality and extremely one-sided in her narrow-minded viewpoints. This could have been a fun and fanciful read. Instead it's a political slog that is proving difficult to get through.
