Do not spend your money on this.
This thing is awful. The screaming noise it makes, while not constant, is enough to drive anyone mad. The only way to stop it is to unplug the machine and let us sit for a bit. I purchased this a week ago and have had to do this three times already. For this price point that is unacceptable.

Great machine so far.
I've only had the machine since Christmas, but I absolutely love it. It make great ice and does a decent job of keeping that ice cold. I make a batch everyday except Saturdays and Sundays. The machine is in my office at work. While making ice it can get a little noisy, but not enough to be annoying. Easy to connect and even easier to clean. I hope it lasts a long time.

Please be sure you have a minimum of 3" of clearance around the back and side walls of your Opal for proper air circulation. We recommend cleaning and sanitizing your Opal once per week. The cleaning instructions are provided in your Owner's Manual which is available online. We recommend checking with your retailer regarding their refund policy.

I wanted to love this so badly, my bff has had the same one for over a year with no issues. I was not as lucky, it made horrific squealing sounds the first day we plugged it in. We tried unplugging it, and giving it a rest each day, but the sounds kept coming back. It produces the beautiful ice we expected, but we can’t get past the squeals it produces with it.

Best ice maker! This is my second nugget ice maker. My first one was a different brand and it stopped working due to buildup. This is the best money I have ever spent! It’s so cute on my counter and works so well. The ice is so good and crispy, it’s so easy to use, and love all the functions. It also has a filter for your water. Can’t speak to the longevity of it but love it so far! Love the ice scoop and holder too

Sounds like it’s dying
This is my third GE nugget ice maker. Yet this is the first one that makes a god awful screeching noise like it’s dying every time it makes ice. For the amount the machine costs it should not sound like it’s dying when it works.

Two dissapointments in one
Loved the item but it quit working twice. I just sent it back for the replacement. Target sent me a slide instead. I have to take the slide back and then they will refund my ice maker. They can’t resend another replacement. So they will cancel it!! Now I will lose money because the item price has increased, as well as my warranty money to buy another one. Even better they wanted me to take the slide to target two hours away to make a return for their mistake! It’s bad enough the ice maker has problems, but Target makes it worse!

Do not buy
We bought this against our better judgement after my sister in law had an opal ice machine die on her. She bought an extended warranty though and got hers replaced. This one completely stopped working after two months, won’t even power on. It is technically still under manufacturer warranty but it has been a nightmare dealing with GE. I can’t get a response from them after nearly 2 weeks of bugging them. To be continued whenever they finally get back to me. I guess…

Do Not Buy!
DO NOT BUY!!! Received as a Christmas gift in 2024 and now (Feb 2026) it has started making a very load, screeching/banging noise. Seems to be an issue inside the actual ice making mechanism. We were always on top of the maintenance. They offer just a 1 year limited warranty. Very disappointing.

We recommend ensuring you're following the full cleaning and descaling procedure discussed starting on page 7 of your manual; that manual can be viewed on our GE Appliances website when you look up the model number and go to the product's page. The cleaning/descaling process can often help with an issue. We also suggest disconnecting the Opal from power for three to four hours before reconnecting, to reset it. Obsessed is an understatement for this ice maker. I started researching nugget icemakers this fall and knew I was ready to make the big purchase. I tried really hard to find a cheaper option with great reviews, and I was always pointed back to the GE Opal. When I saw this color option at Target, I loved it even more and knew it would look great on our counter. I purchased the side tank as well and it was definitely pricey altogether but when I say I use this all day every day, I’m not kidding. I’m a big hater of the refrigerator ice that is so cloudy and gross and being able to refill this ice maker with our reverse osmosis filtered water, it’s made all the difference. Every drink is immediately 1000 times better with this ice. I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly noisy, which has been good. It produces so much ice and I have never run out. I do have to refill the side tank every couple of days but it’s not that big of a deal. I know cleaning and descaling is very important and I’ll be honest, I haven’t done it as much as I should, but I recently de-scaled the machine and it was quite tedious. The ice machine itself and water that came out of the tubes was so crystal clear and clean that I feel like nothing really happened from cleaning it, but that may be because the water we use in it is already so clean and filtered. Anyway, I cannot recommend this icemaker enough and I’m so glad I made the big purchase!

Run Away
Wanted to love it, but lasted 2 months 😩Literally 2 days after I bought this after Christmas, it started making the very loud screeching sound. We tried all the tricks and it would stop for a few days and then restart. It finally just stopped making ice altogether. Sent this one back. Such a shame because it made great ice and I loved the look of the ice maker.

Love the ice - reliability an ongoing issue
While the ice maker is wonderful, all I have had are problems with grinding and squeaking despite cleaning it with descaling tabs 1x/month. GE replace it under warranty after 11 months and has since added an inline filter. I'm hoping this will improve the longevity of the unit. For the record, I am on a well with an advanced filtration system. I have no issues with my keurig coffee maker (8 years old), refriderator ice maker, etc.

We recommend only using distilled water in your Opal to help reduce the potential for mineral buildup. It is recommended that you follow the instructions in the owner’s manual for your unit regarding the schedule of running descaling and sanitizing cycles. Using vinegar in the descaling cycle can help break up the minerals as well. It’s important to note that distilled water is different from bottled water, reverse osmosis water, filtered water, or spring water. All of these other options contain varying levels of minerals that can build up in the unit and impede optimal operation. Using distilled water reduces the frequency of descaling and cleaning. Using our scale-inhibiting filter, part P4INKSFLTR, is designed to increase the time between cleanings and reduces the solidification of scale. It is recommended that there be at least 3” of clearance in the back, on both sides, and above the Opal to allow proper air flow so that the fan can move air around the unit.
