Q: What do I do if I break it and the liquid leaks out? How do you suggest cleaning? Is it mercury? Thank you!
submitted by How to clean - 2 years ago
A: The Taylor candy thermometer is a non-mercury thermometer. The tube should not break under normal conditions. Be sure to let the thermometer cool completely before cleaning. The liquid is alcohol based and can be cleaned with normal countertop cleaners.

Q: does the print (temps) on the thermometer wash off like my old Taylor candy thermometer?
submitted by jjcreech - 4 years ago
A: Taylor suggests using a damp cloth and carefully cleaning or spot cleaning the thermometer. Hard scrubbing and hot water is not recommended. Any additional questions, please reach back out. Thanks!

High quality, simple to use. It’s also much larger than I thought it would be.

Haven’t used for making candy, but it works good for deep frying and making beer. Just a little annoying to clean afterwards.

It is terribly inaccurate. Have had several cheap candy thermometers for making caramel. The others didn't last but were more accurate. This thermometer is a good 20 degrees off, which is huge is candy making
One small issue...

This thermometer performed flawlessly. We bought this to make homemade caramels. It is worthnoting that the thermomter has a temperature noted for "caramel", 340°, that is about 100° too hot for making that kind of candy. In fact, the correct temperature is listed on the back of the package.

Only used a couple times, and the bottom half of numbers and lines are completely gone. Obviously I only wash it by hand, but this is ridiculous. It’s useless to me without the actual temperatures.
Fit the bill.

Don’t try to use this on meat, the bottom is so wide it destroys the meat. Good for candy I’m sure. The appearance of my meatloaf makes it unfit to be served on a table. Jody

I do not recommend this product. When I opened the package to use it, I noticed that the red temperature line was broken (split) so would not provide an accurate reading. I tried everything to get the fluid line to rejoin but nothing worked. I am going to return this and look for a digital thermometer. Don't waste your money.

I mean it is a thermometer... it does that job... tells me the temperature of things I put it in. Would recommend if you too need to know the temperature of things food-related.
10° off

This thermometer new out of the box registered a good 10° off from actual temperature. For some that might be acceptable but if you are candy making as the thermometer advertises it is for, then every degree counts and these should be properly calibrated. Hoping Target will accept this return as a faulty item.
Doesn't Read Temp Accurately

This Thermometer Is Completely Inaccurate. I Tested It Against My Usual Go To Candy Thermometer And They Were Reading 10 Degrees Apart. The Liquid Wasn't Separated, So I'm Not Sure What Would Have Caused That Much Disparity. Returning.
