Paper punches commonly handle paper, cardboard, PVC cards, plastics and leather. Metal punch kits and hydraulic knockout sets are built for metals such as stainless steel, iron, steel, aluminum, brass and copper, and similar plate materials.

Capacities vary by tool: handheld single-hole craft punches often handle around 8–10 sheets, many desktop three-hole punches handle about 10–12 sheets, and electric or commercial machines can punch much more — some models can handle up to about 28 sheets at a time.

Common types include manual handheld punches (cushioned-handle or EZ‑Squeeze craft models), hydraulic knockout punch kits with multiple dies for metal work, and electric/commercial multi-hole machines for higher-volume office or industrial use.

Many punches include built-in waste or chip holders, confetti catchers, or slide-out chip trays so punch-outs are collected for easy disposal, reducing mess and making cleanup quicker.

Common configurations are single-hole craft punches for tags and reinforcement, two-hole machines for specific binder systems, and three-hole desktop punches for standard 3‑ring binders.

Many hand-held punches use rubber or soft plastic handles and cushioned grips to reduce hand strain. Some models feature an EZ‑Squeeze mechanism, anti‑skid grips, or longer levers to make operation easier.

Some metal punch tools offer two working modes: a base-mounted platform for bench‑top use and a detachable mode that lets you position the punch directly on large or fixed workpieces for on‑site installations.

Office two‑ and three‑hole punches commonly make about 9/32" diameter holes for standard binders. Many craft single‑hole punches produce roughly 1/4" diameter holes.
