About this item

Highlights

  • SOLAR POWER TECHNOLOGY: The kit includes all materials needed to build five out-of-this-world robots that are powered by the sun—batteries not required!
  • INNOVATIVE BUILDING SYSTEM: Assemble the main robot, Helio, and four robot vehicle bases simultaneously—no disassembly and reassembly required.
  • o QUICK-SWAP, CLICK-AND-GO ROBOTS: Build Helio with an electric motor, powered by the included solar panel, and quickly and easily click it in and out of the different bases to create four additional robots that move in different ways: the Walking Bot, a two-legged robot that loves to explore; the Trike Bot, a three-wheeled robot that adds speed and steering as it rolls around; a Bug Bot with six legs for stability and traction; and the Orbiting Platform, a resting spot for Helio to rotate gently in place.
  • REAL-WORLD CONNECTIONS: Through the hands-on building activities, kids will explore relevant technology like solar power, and the importance of the Sun’s energy in our everyday lives.
  • FOR A RANGE OF AGES & ENVIRONMENTS: The 36-page, full-color manual guides kids through assembly (ages 6+ with help from an adult; 9+ for independent play) and use; the solar panel powers the robots when exposed to direct sunlight or with a light source of 50 Watts or more (e.g. a halogen lamp or incandescent bulb) when used indoors.

Description

Build five out-of-this-world robots that are powered by the sun — batteries not required! First assemble the main robot, Helio, complete with solar panel, electric motor, and gear wheel. Then construct four space exploration vehicles to help Helio travel around the universe. As you quickly move Helio from one vehicle to another, the gears click into place, and the compact solar panel instantly begins converting sunlight into electricity, which powers the electric motor. Build a walking bot that marches along on two legs, a bug bot that crawls on six legs, a trike bot that rolls around on three wheels, and a sleek orbiting platform. Each model demonstrates how solar power can be used to make different mechanisms move. The 36-page, full-color manual guides solar power pioneers through model assembly and offers fun scientific facts about the real-life applications of solar technology. Where will the sunlight take your cosmic explorers next?

Cool toy

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My kids loved putting this together. But it hasn’t been played with since. It’s a cool concept but they haven’t seem interested in the bot after the assembly.

Fun STEM toy

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My 8 year old was able to put it together on his own after we took apart the pieces. The sticker on the solar panel was very difficult to remove. It is powered by the sun so if it’s cloudy or rainy then it’s not able to be used. It sits on his shelf when it’s not in use. It is easily switched between the different robots. Definitely time consuming to put together but if you have a builder then it is fine.

Overly complicated and faulty.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was far more complicated and frustrating than expected. The box says ages 6+ with help and 9+ can do it independently, but even as adults in our 30s, my husband and I had to constantly help our 6 and 14 year olds and still ended up confused multiple times. We followed the directions step by step, and still had to adjust, take apart, and redo parts repeatedly just to get it to function even partially. Even then, it never really worked as it was supposed to. The biggest issue was the solar charging. We left it in direct sunlight for hours with no response at all. It wouldn’t power on or charge. The only way we could get it to “turn on” and move at all was by placing a flashlight directly on the solar panel, which isn’t practical and defeats the entire purpose of a solar powered toy. The toy is cute and the concept is cool, but the amount of time, frustration, and troubleshooting required was not worth the end result.

Tiny solar bot!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This product requires lots of patience, precision, and attention to detail. If your child is under 9 they will definitely need help as the box states, but I would think there would be some 9+ children who would need help too. We decided to build the walking bot. Once assembled, it was pretty cool how easily it worked once brought out in the sun. We will be trying the other models on another day, because I’m exhausted!

No energy cell, still a lot of fun.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I really like this company. We have built another robot that was great as well. The instructions for assembly and all the parts are nicely organized and incredibly easy to follow. This robot is a lot smaller than we thought it would be, but it features several "vehicles" to snap the main robot into. My boy was quite excited when we completed each vehicle and couldn't wait to test each one. Our main disappointment is that there is no battery cell to store energy, and this will ONLY operate while exposed to solar energy. That being said, we've still had a wonderful time.

Such a fun educational kit!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Such a fun educational kit! The Solar Bots:Cosmic Explorers lets kids build different robots (walking, trike, bug bots) powered by the Sun, which is amazing for introducing STEM in a hands-on way. The quality is great and pieces feel durable. Just keep in mind- kids will need some help, especially in the beginning when unhooking and assembling the smaller parts. Overall, a really fun activity to do together!

Really Cool toy, def harder to assemble than listed.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is definitely a cool toy and I thought my 10 year old would love putting it together but it was tricky. The box says 6+ need help and 9+ can do it alone. I don’t agree. There were so many steps. I do like that the pieces were all labeled clearly. My son was confused and started to lose interest. However, once it was built he thought it was really cool. He love that it moved on it’s on in the sun. He loves science and really was intrigued by it. I think it’s a great value for the price. I definitely think it can last depending on the care. I would buy this for a birthday party but maybe for kids a little older.

Great educational project

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Building the solarbots was super fun , the directions are very clear which made it simple to put together . Without realizing it while I'm putting it together you learn. A lot about gears and how they work also. With helios other vehicles you build it makes for endless fun on a great sunny day . I will say however if it's a overcast day or just normal PNW Oregon weather helio is a bit down in the dumps and don't wanna do much robotercises😉. But all in all super great project toy .

So much fun being a Cosmic Explorer!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This was so much fun to assemble. Just make sure that you have a pair of toenail clippers or scissors to remove all the burrs or the wheels will not properly turn. It can be time consuming to find all of the little parts, but it will keep you little ones busy for hours. Each creation is super cute, helps children (and adults) learn how to follow instructions, and have fun with STEM concepts. Who doesn't love building robots?!?!? I love it.

Simple, educational, and genuinely entertaining.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This STEM kit is so much fun! The pieces snapped together easily, and I was surprised by how well the solar-powered movement worked. My kids loved watching the bots crawl and spin in the sunlight – it turned into a "science afternoon" without me even planning it. Simple, educational, and genuinely entertaining.

Building the robot

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The setup is very hard I can barely see the numbers The value of it is kind of cheap and fragile The appearance is cool though The materials are not what I expected and the sound that's not even working what sound it didn't work

Fun to build

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This toy turned out to be interesting to assemble for my 11 years old son. He really enjoyed the building process because the were many small parts and it kept him engaged. However, after finishing the assembly, the excitement faded a bit.

Really fun

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My 10 year old son had a great time building this! We spent a lovely afternoon building this together. He was able to do most everything by himself. I did have to contact the company because the robot wasn't working. They were super quick and helpful with responding and sent me replacement parts quickly. I would definitely get other kits from them in the future!

Creativity unlocked

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Such a creative toy for children. My kids could not keep their hands off this toys. It kept them occupied for a while! They were able to connect the pieces together and it was accurate. The toy is a decent size. It brought out their creative and experimental side and my kids felt a level of accomplishment after putting it together.
