A: We recommend you descale and sanitize your Opal every 4 weeks or more often depending on the mineral content (hardness level) of your water. We offer step-by-step directions in the online Owner's Manual. The manual can be found by searching for the specific model number of your Opal on our GE Appliances site. Q: How much water does the side tank hold?

A: The side tank holds 3 quarts of water, or 3/4th of a gallon. Add in the bottom part, and you need one full gallon of water. Use Distilled water for cleaning, but I use spring water for making ice.

It makes great ice and I fill it up maybe once a week with distilled water and when I say the family love it, its awesome. No more running to the local gas station for crunchy ice. You have got to get you one.

Love the ice it makes the only issue is that it now makes a knocking sound & other load sound when it is starting to make ice. This is our second machine, the 1st one just stopped working after having it just over 1 year & now this acting up too.

Bought this Feb 2024 and it started making loud banging noise the last 6mo and now just stopped working. Had high hopes but this is frustrating for the cost.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great at making ice but if you install the GE water filter it does not like to make ice. It acts like it is plugged up regardless or what you do. I have purchased two filters from different places and followed the instructions meticulously. Each works for about a day then the ice maker says it needs water. It is easy to install. Be careful about noting which line goes into the external tank. The ice is fantastic both size and texture. The capacity is sufficient. It occasionally squeals but that usually lets you know it is about time for a cleaning.

I got my icemaker and it doesnt even work. It has flooded my whole kitchen and I have been notified by GE that they will not be replacing my new appliance. Bad choice! I have photos and vidoes

We'd like to help out with the sounds you are noticing with your Opal. Hearing a squeaking or screeching sound can indicate that the unit is running a defrost cycle. This happens when ice starts to build up around the mechanisms.
