On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, What starts here changes the world, he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life; and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.

Admiral McRaven's original speech went viral with over 10 million views. Building on the core tenets laid out in his speech, McRaven now recounts tales from his own life and from those of people he encountered during his military service who dealt with hardship and made tough decisions with determination, compassion, honor, and courage. The book is a good read for someone who wants to go further in life and change their perspective. One of the most important lessons is never quitting, because persistence leads to success. Furthermore, this book is a good read for anyone who enjoys a structured life, as it teaches that small daily habits can create long-term personal growth. The author is somewhat hardcore in his lessons; however, they can be applied to anything, not just the Navy. Many people would likely enjoy this book if they want to learn lessons that help them overcome challenges. His lessons were so inspiring that he spoke to the 2014 graduating class at the University of Texas.

Interesting Book

I found that Make Your Bed by William H McRaven is one of the most interesting and exciting books to read. The book details the ten life lessons that William McRaven learned through his thirty-seven years spent as a Navy SEAL. The book is also based on William McRaven’s speech that was made at the University of Texas, which I also watched. McRaven shows how doing the little things or insignificant tasks can make you start your day with completed tasks in the morning and help you accomplish the harder tasks or goals later the day. McRaven shared how his time in the Navy shaped his personality by meeting different people and going to different places, which helped expand his experience and knowledge in life. They are small lessons that deal with overcoming the Navy SEAL training, but the ten lessons are important in dealing with life challenges as well. The book shows how life isn’t fair and what matters is only the size of your heart. I agree with McRaven that failure is what makes you stronger because I believe that failure is part of the success journey, and you can’t succeed without failure. My favorite lesson was “Never, ever quit”, almost all successful people who have changed the world have failed, and if they gave up on what they were doing, we won’t be where we are at right now in terms of education, technology and advancement. Another lesson that I really liked is “If you want to change the world … be your very best in the darkest moments”, I agree with McRaven that you should reach deep inside yourself and be your very best in dark moments, because eventually we all come across dark moments in our lives. It’s very important to be the very best at those dark moments because you might make decisions during those moments that could affect you for the rest of your life. Finally, I think that Make Your Bed book is an outstanding enjoyable book, full of great life lessons for anyone. Although the examples are from the military life, it’s beneficial for anyone regardless of their age or what stage of life they are in.
