Q: Is this soil right option to seed the plant or its good for growing plants

submitted by Maninder - 8 days ago
  • A: Hi Maninder! Our Organic Garden Soil is great for in-ground garden beds. If you are starting seeds indoors for transplant, we recommend using our Organic 3-in-1 Seed Starting Soil. Feel free to reach out to contact@backtotheroots.com — we would be happy to help you find the right soil to start your garden.

Q: Hi, after purchsed yesteday, I realized Purge date is Jan 2025. Does that mean it is expired?

submitted by Lena - 25 days ago
  • A: Hi Lena! The date printed on the bag is a manufacture code, referring to when the soil was bagged and sealed. You can safely use the soil — but feel free to send photos of the soil to contact@backtotheroots.com, and we'd be happy to take a look and make sure everything is healthy.

Q: I may have chosen the wrong potting soil. Can this be used for inside plants?B

submitted by - 11 months ago
  • A: Hi Robert! Our Back to the Roots Organic Garden Soil is specially formulated for in-ground outdoor planting, and it’s not ideal for indoor potted plants. It’s heavier and designed for outdoor soil environments, which means it might not provide the right drainage and aeration your indoor plants need. For indoor use, we recommend our Organic Potting Mix, which is lighter and specifically blended for container gardening and houseplants. If you’d like help choosing a soil or have any other questions, feel free to contact us at contact@backtotheroots.com — we’re here to help!

Q: Is this soil safe to put in my toddlers sensor box to play with? He’s 3 and doesn’t put anything in his mouth anymore so he’s just playing with his hands

submitted by Concerned Mom - 11 months ago
  • A: Hello! Thanks for your question! Back to the Roots Organic Garden Soil is made with natural, organic ingredients and is designed to be safe for home gardening. That said, it’s not specifically tested or intended for sensory play or use by children. While many parents choose natural soil for sensory bins, we always recommend supervising play and washing hands afterward—just to be safe. If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to us at contact@backtotheroots.com. We're happy to help and love supporting your growing journey—whether it’s in the garden or a sensory box!

Q: Can this be used in raised garden beds too? The other type that is specifically for raised beds doesn't for use with growing flowers.

submitted by Momof2 - 1 year ago
  • A: Hello! Thanks for your question! While our Organic Garden Soil can be used in raised garden beds, it's specially formulated to be mixed with native soil for in-ground planting, where it really shines. If you're planting in raised beds, we recommend our Raised Bed Mix for best results — it's designed specifically for that setup. But feel free to experiment and see what works best for your garden! Love this soil plants are doing great

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love this garden soil! Send it for my outside plants. There is no odor and I love that! I feel like I don’t have to water as much, seems to hold the water. The weight is normal and the texture is also normal. I highly recommend this product

Strong Manure Smell, Not Safe for Edibles- Quality Concerns

I have used this in the past for the ease of an organic soil product that can be delivered to my car at pick up with other items at Target. However, the past several bags I've had, were infested with tiny gnats that ruined one crop, mites, and I had another bag of mulch that was molded. I tried this brand again today, to refresh Spring beds, and both of the bags I recieved smelled like rancid animal waste. The bags were ripping and dropping soil, so I put them in a nearby garden bed, opening to see if the smell would settle. It did not, and in fact, it immediately attacted flies almost immediately. Huge red flag that this was not properly composted, My garden hadn't yet seen flies this season so that was very telling that this soil contains dangerous pathogens. I cannot risk Salmonella or E. Coli in our garden so I will be requesting a refund and not purcahsing this product again as it seems quality control is missing the mark. I loved the ease of purchasing, and the price point as well the the organic certifications but sadly I don't trust the safety of the soil quality. I will be going back to ordering Coast of Maine or Fort Vee from Vermont Compost.

    Soft dry soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Great mulch mix compost with plant food in it. Soft and dry not wet like some. The bag is sturdy and not thin so when I carry it, it doesn’t fall apart. No odor at all. Started a couple seed plants in my clay pots for now. Can’t wait to add it to my big garden with each veggie plant. It’s almost garden time and what better way then to have this great soil to get them on the right track.

    Gorgeous garden soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is absolutely gorgeous garden soil, filled with earthworms, dark and crumbly. I used it to refresh a corner of our garden and planted some early spring veggies (spinach and radishes). I can’t wait to see how they thrive with this boost of rich, healthy soil!

This soil was full of flies. It also smells so bad I had a neighbor text me asking what the nasty farm smell was. I’m worried the bugs will spread.

    A great nutrient-filled garden soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this garden soil free of charge from Influenster in exchange for my honest review of the soil. I transplanted several indoor plants with this soil and the soil was noted to be soft, non-clumpy, moist, full of nutrients and helped perk up my plants. I will use the remainder of this well packaged bag of soil in my outdoor garden in about a month as I prepare my outdoor vegetable garden. I highly recommend this garden soil.

Can't wait to see my flowers grow this spring!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This soil smelled very earthy, yet clean with no scent of any chemical pesticides or fertilizers. The consistency was great, no big chunks of bark, no hard solid clumps of dirt. This soil is light and airy, as well as very fine, no big chunks of organic material. It was also very easy to spread. I'm excited to see what my plants think of it as we get closer to spring!

    Grows the perfect plant.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We love the brand Back to the Roots. When my son fist started his gardening journey, this is what we bought. This garden soil has consistently been a reliable choice for his journey. The quality is top notch and we have never encounters any issues like mold or unpleasant scents like some of the other brands. The color is deep and rich for quality growing. It’s able to compact well to hold the new plant in place. This is a great choice for all your gardening.

    Good Soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The packaging wasn’t sturdy and came with a hole so the soil was getting everywhere. But the product itself has been good so far. Started using it for some tomato seeds to prepare for the spring. Will need to wait a little to see if there will be any growth. I like that it is organic as well.

    Terrible bug infested dirt.

Terrible. It was full of little bugs like fruit flies. Infested all the plants I re-potted. I’m extremely mad. I’ve spent more now trying to get rid of the flies. Wish I would’ve just bought cheap regular dirt.

Hi Nicole — we’re so sorry to hear about your experience. What you’re likely seeing are fungus gnats, small flies that are attracted to moist soil after repotting. While they can be frustrating, they don’t harm healthy plants. We’d love to make this right. Please email us at contact@backtotheroots.com with photos of the front and back of your bag, and our team will gladly help with a replacement or refund. We appreciate you sharing this feedback and hope we can turn this around for you.

    Perfect to jumpstart the garden

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received this soil in exchange for my honest review. This is intended for in ground use and is ideal for vegetable gardens. I added it to my vegetable beds and can see that not only will it add good nutrients but includes some bark like mulch to help retain moisture, which will be much needed in California summer. This was great to mix with my clay like ground soil and was easy to handle and manage myself.

    My favorite.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I used the Back to the Roots Organic Garden Soil – Premium Blend for my in-ground beds this season, and overall I’m really pleased with it. The texture is loose and easy to work with, and it blends nicely into existing soil without feeling overly heavy or compacted. I appreciate that it’s organic and already mixed with plant food and dolomitic limestone — it saves an extra step and gives plants a solid start. My vegetables and flowers transplanted well, and I noticed good early growth and strong color within the first couple of weeks. It holds moisture well without staying soggy, which is important in my area during hot spells. I didn’t notice any large sticks or debris, which can sometimes be an issue with bagged soil.
