Most clock radios let you wake to the built-in radio or a standard alarm tone. Many models also include dual alarms, natural-sound selections, sunrise/light simulation, or the option to wake to a CD or external audio source.

Power configurations vary: many plug into AC power (with an included adapter) and offer battery backup; some run on replaceable AA or AAA batteries; and others include built-in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Most clock radios support AM and FM reception. Some models add weather-band coverage and NOAA weather alerts that automatically switch to emergency broadcasts when an alert is received.

Most use backlit LCD or LED displays and include dimmer or multiple brightness settings. Note that some units have very bright displays with no dim option.

Many clock radios offer preset memory—commonly 10 AM and 10 FM presets—while some provide larger counts (for example, 19 or 20). Tuning is usually PLL/digital with auto-seek and manual tuning options.

Sizes range from pocket-sized portables (for example about 4.19 x 1.18 x 2.52 inches and 0.22 pounds) up to larger tabletop units (for example 9 x 5 x 4.25 inches and about 3.5 pounds), so portability depends on the model.

Many models include a USB charging port for smartphones. Common output ratings are 1 amp or 2.1 amps; some units offer USB ports alongside AC operation and battery backup.

Beyond AM/FM radio, many clock radios support auxiliary input, Bluetooth streaming, CD/MP3 playback, and microSD cards. Several models can also act as Bluetooth speakers and include built-in microphones.
