Q: After the free 3 month subscription, is the Leap frog useless? What are it’s capabilities without paying a monthly price? Thanks

submitted by Pcholiday - 7 years ago
  • A: Hi, you can explore 20 included apps to develop learning skills like coding, reading, math, science, spelling, puzzles and logic. Also, parents can set time limits and choose which apps or websites can be used on up to three profiles. Update limits in parent settings as kids grow. Best Regards, VTechkids

submitted byLeapFrog - 7 years ago

  • A: Not at all - the 3 month trial subscription is only for the "Academy" App. After the three months, if you decide to continue it, the charge is $5 per month (and that includes more than one tablet (so it is nice if you have more than one child using it, the charge is still only $5)). The other apps are either pre-loaded on the tablet (like how some apps are included on a cell phone), or you can purchase additional apps on the parent page for approx. $5 to $10 each, and they can also be uploaded to more than one tablet. We initially did not continue the Academy subscription, and the table was completely usable and fun for the kids since they have several other apps to choose from and play. Similar to a cell phone - there are apps that get used and apps that don't (if your child loves the Academy app, you may want to continue the subscription; if not, cancel and they can play the other apps). Also, Leapfrog runs specials and discount codes for the app store, so keep an eye out for those.

This tablet is designed for children aged 3 to 8, offering a range of educational games and activities that engage young learners. While many guests appreciate its ease of use and educational value, concerns about durability and battery life have been raised. The age range on this toy is 3 to 8 years of age. I purchased the tablet my four year old granddaughter. The second time she used the tablet she dropped it against a piece of furniture and the screen cracked. I contacted Leapfrog about repairing the screen and was told the tablet is "indestructible", therefore they don't repair the screens. So after two uses this $120 toy is now trash. I am extremely disappointed in my purchase.

Fun gift for 5 year old.

Purchased this for our 5 year old and he is really enjoying it for the last few months. The ease of use is perfect for preschoolers and school age kids. It has been dropped multiple times but has not cracked so the the durability is worth mentioning for the active kids. Lots of educational and fun games to keep him entertained.

    Save your money

Do not buy this tablet for your child. It’s not a matter of if it will break—it’s when. If it breaks after Target’s 90-day return window, LeapFrog will not help you. Customer support repeatedly sends their return policy, which clearly states they will not replace the screen, the most common part to break. On top of that, most repair shops won’t even work on LeapFrog tablets because of how they’re constructed. So you end up spending $120+ on a tablet that’s essentially unusable within a year. I think LeapFrog is a great company overall, but this is extremely frustrating and feels sketchy. You’re honestly better off buying an iPad or Android tablet and adding parental controls than investing in a kids’ tablet that may only last five or six months.

    Screen not durable

Screen broke within 2 days after christmas, was pretty disappointed since its advertised to be kid proof. I did contact leapfrog but it falls under accidental break so they couldn't help. Pretty expensive gift that lasted 2 days.

    Failed by leapfrog

This tablet requires way too much to even get started and once you create an account there’s all there fees for subscription and apps! And it’s super slow at downloading and use of features. Take’s so long to upload a game! Waste of time and money to be honest.

    Joke.

I’m actually disappointed in this leap pad. You have to pay for the tablet obviously. Then once getting in- you pay a $30 subscription for the year- the apps included in this subscription are not that fun- you then go to purchase more apps and the apps are $10-$30? Non are free. This is a waste of money you might as well buy your child an iPad. ALSO non of the games that are included and what’s shown in the pictures of the kids playing? Yea joke.

DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR CHILD. This was highly recommended for our child, and the educational games were great for a while, although they were $6 a month. Our son has not broken anything in his life (he is a very gentle polite kid) and when we had company over, I walked out of a room and came back a second later and the screen had a small crack in it. Idk if someone stepped on it, but nobody banged it on anything. The tiny crack made half the screen stop working. Unlike normal tablets, the screen cannot be replaced or repaired. TOTAL SCAM. If you are going to do anything, just buy a cheap tablet and get a good case. It is way more durable than this would ever be.

    Disapointing

1 star is too generous if I’m being honest. I absolutely regret purchasing this. Without paying tons of extra money this “tablet” is essentially useless. They only provide the most basic games and activities and the rest you have to purchase a subscription or pay $10+ per game to keep. (Hoping the kid likes the game they pick). I really wanted to download games like Kahn academy or other educational games but can’t do that. I had hopes this tablet would have at least a few good learning games for numbers, letters etc. but nope. The tablet is also very slow and laggy. It wouldn’t be so bad if their store offered at least some free apps. I bought this for my 3 year old for his 4th birthday but I’m absolutely sure he will be too advanced for this at that point. And even now

Sold me a defective, used leappad

My daughter was getting upset that it lagged so much. It was making her so mad she didn’t want to play with it anymore. Only had it for 3 days and when I purchased it, the box was taped with scotch tape and it was hard for me to get into it. Had to factory reset it and that made it worse. I paid for a new, not one that someone had already. I ended up buying the same one on Amazon for $6 cheaper and there are no problems with it. If it’s leapfrog products that are messing up, then I’m going to contact the manufacturer. But if it was just Target trying to sell a defective item, then it is target’s fault for selling a defective item that was already purchased before.
