Insects may also come in with the soil of transplanted plants or enter through cracks, crevices, open windows or doors simply looking for a suitable environment. The small flying insects are likely fungus gnats. These insects do not harm humans and do little plant damage (they primarily feed on the fungus found naturally in soil), but can be a nuisance. A possible way to control fungus gnats includes allowing the soil to dry out as much as possible between watering, which will help control the larvae. Also, you can try applying at least 1/2 inch of horticultural sand on top of the soil of potted/container plants; the larvae cannot burrow through the sand and will die.
