OINTMENT VS CREAM - WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE?
There are three main types of moisturizers: lotions, creams, and ointments. Generally speaking, lotions tend to be the most lightweight moisturizer option, followed by creams, and then ointments—which are usually the thickest and most occlusive. Many people with dry skin choose to include both creams and ointments in their skincare routine. For example, you can apply CeraVe Moisturizing Cream first to help relieve dry skin all over your face and body. Next, CeraVe Healing Ointment can be applied to help provide soothing benefits and targeted relief for chafed or cracked areas (such as chapped lips, cracked heels, and dry hands).

Q: Is this greesy? My elderly father doesn't like anything greesy

  • A: Hello Donught! Thank you for your question about our Healing Ointment and your father's preference regarding texture. Our CeraVe Healing Ointment is formulated to provide intensive hydration and help protect and soothe extremely dry, chafed, or cracked skin. It creates a protective barrier on the skin's surface to lock in moisture and support the skin's natural healing process. Due to its occlusive nature, designed for deep hydration and protection, it does have a rich and emollient feel. While it is designed to absorb over time to deliver its benefits, its initial application creates a noticeable layer on the skin, which some individuals might perceive as having a more substantial or "greasy" texture compared to a lightweight lotion. We understand that personal preferences for texture, especially for those with sensitive skin or particular comfort needs, are very important.

For products too small to accommodate the list, a separate ingredient list is available on the display unit in the store for your convenience. Q: is petrolatum in cera view petroleum based

submitted by Iscore - 8 days ago
  • A: Hello Iscore. Thank you for your interest in CeraVe Healing Ointment Skin Protectant, Sooths Dry, Cracked and Chafed Skin, Non-Greasy Unscented. The petrolatum (petroleum) used in CeraVe Healing Ointment is sourced and processed according to L’Oréal’s strict global safety and sustainability standards. While the specific name of the commercial supplier is proprietary, the sourcing and quality adhere to specific standards. Petrolatum is a derivative of petroleum; it is a purified mixture of mineral oils and waxes. During petroleum refinement, a byproduct of the distillation step is petrolatum residuum. This residuum is further refined and purified to produce petrolatum. Petrolatum is an occlusive agent (forms a barrier on the skin’s surface) and an emollient. These benefits mean that petrolatum helps keep dry skin hydrated by reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and soft/supple by filling in spaces between dry cells in the skin’s outermost layers. The FDA recognizes petrolatum (at levels >30%) as a skin protectant that temporarily protects and helps relieve chafed, chapped or cracked skin. We hope this information is helpful and that you will try our products soon. Thank you again for your interest in CeraVe.

Q: Does this product sting the skin when applied?

submitted by Cheryl - 2 months ago
  • A: Hello Cheryl! No, the Healing Ointment is developed with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help restore the skin's natural protective barrier and provide deep, long-wear hydration without causing stinging or irritation. This petrolatum-based formula is designed for dry, cracked, and irritated skin to be a gentle and soothing barrier for all skin types. A helpful tip is to apply a thin, even layer of the healing ointment to clean, dry skin on the affected areas and follow with a non-comedogenic moisturizer if needed. Because this ointment is fragrance-free and provides deep, long-wear moisture, it ensures that your skin remains nourished and protected from potential irritations from the environment throughout the day. We look forward to providing you with the reliable moisture and barrier support you need for your daily skincare.

    disappointed

I really liked this ointment and stood by it when it came to dry skin and eczema. Until my latest purchase. It applies and feels super sticky and leaves so much excessive residue. Just feels so heavy when applying unlike my previous one which I still have. Don't care for the new and improved recipe. Not worth it for the price!

The new formula is much stickier and doesn’t absorb properly. I loved the old version, but this one leaves a greasy film on my skin. Very disappointed with the change. I will not be purchasing again.

    Formula change is awful

The recent formula change is incredibly disappointing. My children suffer from severe eczema and, as part of our routine for the past 7 years, we would apply Cerave Healing Ointment in the morning and at night. Like clockwork, I regularly purchase a new jar every month because we go through it so quickly. This time I saw new and improved on the label and saw that the ingredients have changed. I was quite skeptical but decided to proceed and was absolutely horrified that my children complained that their skin felt like it was stinging. They wanted to wash it off. This was the only product they had applied. Moreover, this new formulation is greasier and stickier. Sadly, now I’m searching for a replacement. This was the only product from Cerave’s line that was tried and true. Why mess with a great thing? If you have sensitive, eczema prone skin and were once a loyal user of the healing ointment, please look elsewhere. This is no longer the holy grail product it once was for many eczema sufferers.

New Formula Is a Genuine Upgrade

I'm actually really liking the reformulation of this product!! I can notice the difference the added glycerin makes in hydration, and the thicker consistency stays on my lips and cuticles much better instead of melting away. It feels like a proper healing ointment now, which is exactly what I was hoping for.

I loved the original product! I used it every night before bed. I hate the new formula, its sticky, drys my skin out etc. Why fix what wasn't broke? Many people that used this regularly are hunting for a new product! You destroyed a great product, shame on you!

Formula Change, New but definitely not improved.

I used to really love this product. It worked amazing for my eczema and honestly felt better than Vaseline or Aquaphor. I swore this was my holy grail. I would buy a bottle every 2 months because of my severe eczema and relied on it constantly. But with the new formula, I don’t feel the same at all. It feels waxy and just not great. I used it right after a shower on clean, slightly damp skin, and immediately noticed the difference with the new bottle I bought. I’m really disappointed in this change. It doesn’t seem like what people wanted, and it’s honestly causing the opposite reaction of what it’s supposed to do. Now I’m going to have to find an alternative, and unfortunately they’ve lost a loyal customer.

Huge disappointment with the change in formula

I have used the healing ointment for years and absolutely loved the old formula. I just bought a new tub of the new and improved version and I cannot use it anymore. It is so sticky and doesn’t dissolve in the skin as easily as the original. I had to return the tub and will have to find a substitute. I use your facial cleansers and other products, but this one no longer works for me.

We are truly sorry to hear that the updated formula of our Healing Ointment did not meet the high standards you’ve come to expect from us. At CeraVe, we constantly strive to enhance our products based on the latest dermatological research, but we understand that texture is a very personal preference. Your feedback about the stickiness is incredibly valuable, and we will certainly share it with our product development team.

The “new and improved formula” is extremely hard to spread, it feels thick, almost like glue. I will not be purchasing again. Wish they had not changed the formula.

Hello Mitzy! Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Healing Ointment texture. Although the packaging has a new look, the formula remains the same, featuring three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to protect the skin barrier. Because of its rich, petrolatum-based consistency, a helpful tip is to warm a small amount between your palms before applying to help it glide more easily onto the skin. Applying it to slightly damp skin also helps lock in extra hydration while ensuring a smoother, more even application.

    A winter essential ❄️

This ointment has been a lifesaver for me during the winter. My lips were extremely dry cracked, and even had small wounds that made them very uncomfortable. Since I started using this product, I’ve noticed a huge improvement. It deeply hydrates, protects my skin, and helps heal damaged areas much faster. The texture is rich but not too heavy, and a little goes a long way. I now use it daily, especially at night, and wake up with much softer and healthier lips.

    New formula sucks

The “new and improved” is horrible! I was using this for my babies eczema and loved it! I bought a new tub recently and didn’t notice the label. Used it and it felt different right away. It was so sticky and tacky. I could still feel how sticky it was in the morning after. The old formula is so much better. I’m so bummed they changed it because I will not be buying it again. I returned the “new and improved” one.

Hello Joy! Thank you so much for sharing your feedback about the Healing Ointment with us. We have recently updated this formula to continue providing high-performance skin protection with three essential ceramides and hyaluronic acid to help restore the skin's natural barrier. Because this ointment is designed to provide long-lasting hydration, its rich, petrolatum-based texture can feel more concentrated during application. A helpful tip for a smoother experience is to warm a very small amount between your palms before gently pressing it onto the skin. Applying it to slightly damp skin can also help the ointment spread more easily and absorb effectively, ensuring your baby's skin stays protected and comfortable.
