Disapointing
This ant farm is set up to fail. The certificate for ants only covers part of the purchase price of the ants. Once they arrive there are no care instructions. Ours all died within days. After some research it seems harvester ants are supposed to be kept at 80+ degrees. We also learned we were supposed to help them start their tunnels but none of this care information was included with the kit or ants themselves. This kit is meant as a temporary observation experience not as a living colony. You will not receive a queen. All in all it has been a disappointing experience.

Wasted
I bought this for my grandson last year. However, we have never been able to use it. When we FINALLY received the ants, most were dead or dying. We put the live ones in the ant factory, hoping maybe they would be ok. By the next morning all but one ant died. We were going to order more ants, but the dead ants were stuck to the blue jell. I wasted money and disappointed my grandson with this product.

Defective
Our gel does not look at all like the pictures or other customers'. Ours is a small block shriveled up, not taking up most of the space like others. Did we get a defective one? Confused! Would love a new one.

Do not buy!
Terrible purchase. You pay for the ant farm AND the ants. I was ok with that considering my son was so excited. The ants didn't even last a week! They buried the ants that arrived dead and then they all balled up and were slowly dying. Terrible!

SO Disappointed!!
You pay for the farm, then you pay for ants. I was ok with it because my son was super excited!! BUT the ants didn’t even last a few days. We followed the directions exactly and after day two they just all balled up and were dying; it was terrible!! DO NOT BUY!

Amazing product for kids
Kids really enjoyed this product (ages 2.5 to 8), and the ants survived a whole year! Once they start dying though they pile up - it’s odd and sad. But something else to talk about with the kids... However, the lid top is NOT secured, it just sits up to, which is not reassuring to any mother of toddlers and young kids handling a FIREANTS farm! We added tape to the lid and briefed the kids over and over on not to open it or drop it, and luckily (miraculously?) had no issues. Great educational product, quite fascinating to watch. But now that all ants have died, not sure how to dispose of it, the landfills certainly don’t need this big plastic object, and no info on how to recycle it.

Terrible design
The gel does not cover all the areas leaving a gap on the sides that the ant would fall into and be unable to escape. After having to buy ants and then almost immediately watch them die with the kids watching was just horrible. Plus the lid on top just goes on without being fastened into place securely. With two young kids and pets its advisable to make it very difficult for the ant to escape even if the Factory tips over.

This is not a good product
The ants have no idea what to do with this gel stuff other than carry chunks of it elsewhere. Doesn't seem like they like it inside. I ordered two of these things. One for each kid and one of the gel containers collapsed on the ants after they had dug tunnels and made a home for themselves. I just feel bad for the ants.

I won't buy this again
The ants died after a few days, now what ? Do we just throw it away.. seems like a waste. The kids just sits on top which made me feel uncomfortable as a parent and these harvester ants can bite! We put a small piece of tape over the top to give an ease of mind.

I would buy this again but...
... the ant company never delivered the ants.... We used the coupon code and the ants were supposed to be here in 3-7 days but it's been three weeks and there's no sign of them :(

My kids are enjoying watching each day...
You do have to purchase the ants after you receive the kit. There is a coupon code included, making the ants just about $5. I was a bit disappointed with the added expense. It didn't take long for the ants to get to work. The pictures are about 72 hours after we put the ants in the container. The lid doesn't snap into place, which is not comforting to this mom that isn't thrilled about having this ant factory in the house. I am curious to see how long the ants will last with the gel as they seem to have made it through a lot in a short amount of time. The light is a neat feature but doesn't really do a lot of good at this point with no tunnels. For now the kids are enjoying it so we will see how it goes.
