Q: can this be used to root christmas cactus>

submitted by kellie - 2 months ago
  • A: Hi Kellie! Yes, our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix can be used for a Christmas cactus. After taking the cuttings (taking Y-shaped cuttings of 1–3 stem segments during spring or autumn), let the cuttings callus in a dry area for 1–2 days, then plant in moist, succulents & cacti mix. Keep in indirect light, and roots typically form in 3–6 weeks.

Q: Is this Vegan (no animal by-products, no manure, no slaughter house products)?

submitted by flvegan - 8 months ago
  • A: Hi there, thank you for your question! Our Organic Succulents & Cacti Mix is not considered vegan. While it’s made primarily from natural plant-based and mineral ingredients, it does contain poultry litter and feather meal, which are animal by-products. These ingredients are commonly used in organic fertilizers as natural sources of nutrients but would not meet vegan standards.

Regret not reading reviews before buying

Considering the higher price, I was shocked when a ton of gnats came out of the bag when I opened it plus there was a lot of larger wood pieces which had to be removed in order to accommodate a small planters. Never experienced either with any other potting soil before. I’ll be tossing the remaining soil.

    Fungus gnats

I wanted to like this, especially for the price. Unfortunately we started noticing gnats a few weeks after I used it. I know it was this culprit because the remaining soil was in the bag in the target bag. I saw a TON of gnats when I checked it. Bummed because I paid so much to get an infestation.

Hi Huntan2! We're sorry to hear you've had this experience. Fungus gnats are common with all organic soils — they thrive in warm, moist soils, and feed on decomposing organic matter. We'd love to hear from you and send a replacement as needed. Please send a photo of the front and back of the bag to contact@backtotheroots.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

It’s helping my plants come back from near death!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I am hoping this soil will help save my succulents and aloe plant. They seem to be trying to grow back which makes me super happy! The soil is moist and doesn’t cause a lot of dust which is also a plus. I wish the bag was resealable because with small succulents you don’t typically need a large bag. The packaging is nice and makes it easy for me to keep it separate from my other soil types so I appreciate that. Overall I’m happy with it!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I tried this to grow succulents but it didn't work. Not sure what went wrong. I don't blame the product completely since I'm an amateur with succulents. Should try again.

    Indoor potting soil

Small amount for the price, but overall it’s a good quality organic soil if you’re only needing to just fill a few small pots.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I own a variety of succulents that need repotting. Nowhere near being a green thumb so was happy to find the Back to the Roots Succulent mix. This bag will pot up to four 6 inch pots. It was easy to work with and didn’t have a strong smell. I like that this mix includes plant food as well. Looking forward to seeing my succulents thrive.

    My plants loving this soil

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been using the Back to the Roots Succulent Mix (6 qt) for a little bit now and honestly, I really like it. The texture is nice and airy with thay gritty feel you want for a succulents, it doesn’t feel dense or heavy at all, which make repotting super easy. When it comes to watering, I don’t feel like I have to stress as much about overdoing it because the soil drains really well. It doesn’t stay soggy, and my plants seem a lot happier because of it. It’s also pretty lightweight and a good amount for the price, so I feel like it’s definitely worth it - especially if you have a few plants to take care of. Overall, it just makes plant care feel a lot simpler.
