In 2016, Shontay Lundy created Black Girl Sunscreen, a 30 SPF lotion infused with natural ingredients and formulated for women of color. Made with melanated skin in mind, BGS dries completely clear and protects melanin without the white-cast.

Right when I put it on, I noticed there was a minimal whitecast due to the zinc oxide. After reapplying, the whitecast became more obvious on my face. During the 1st application, I would occasionally itch my face. However, it got much worse after I reapplied this sunscreen since the bottom half of my face became super itchy. By the time I got home and washed it off, my face was left with small bumps and appeared super dry / red. It seems like I’m not the only one dealing with these problems based on the previous reviews. You’re better off trying the 30 SPF or the kids version!

To Pill or Not To Pill
It has a really thick texture. I am fair skinned and I didn’t mind the white cast that others have mentioned but on my third use it started to pill really bad on my face. I only ever wear sunscreen on clean skin, so nothing was out of the ordinary, I had to wipe it off immediately because from my forehead down to my chin I looked like I was shedding. I do love the kids sunscreen though, so I may go back to that one.

Classic Mineral Sunscreen Problems
This is not my favorite sunscreen at all but for an affordable mineral sunscreen it’s be expected. It leaves a white cast and I have a light skin tone so it’s even more obvious on darker skin. If you are a makeup user it won’t work well under makeup. It doesn’t burn my eyes as much as other American sunscreens but still be very careful. I simply buy this one bc of the smell and packaging and the other one is far too low in spf.
