If you don’t have any gray to cover, you can use the Nutrisse Ultra Color LB1, "Ultra Light Cool Blonde,". If there’s gray that needs covering as well, you won’t be able to get to anything lighter than a dark blonde using a home color kit.

We grow about half an inch of new hair each month so in 4 to 8 weeks you’ll see a clear difference between the dyed hair and your natural hair color in the new growth. This is the time when most of us opt to touch up the roots with a new box of color to blend the new growth in with the previously dyed hair.

A: Hi there CMC. Not all hair dyes are made for covering gray. The Nutrisse Ultra Colors are specifically for use on natural dark hair and won’t cover gray. Select a color from the Nutrisse Crème Colors. Since dyed hair is much harder to lighten than natural hair. No hair dye is strong enough to lighten artificial pigment. To go lighter first you would have to have a salon professional strip out the dark dye first with a bleach lightener made for removing dark hair dye.

Does not cover grays!
Very disappointed in this product. The smell is extremely strong, my hair even after applying the conditioner that comes with the box of color was falling out in clumps. This absolutely DOES NOT COVER GRAYS! I used the deep violet color and my roots are an awkward shiny pink and the rest of my hair looks brown no hint of purple let alone intense violet. The product raves about it's amazing gray coverage on the box but don't be fooled you're going to walk around looking like a circus clown. I followed the instructions exactly as they were printed. Do yourself a favor and buy a more expensive product that actually delivers on it's promises. I only bought this because my usual brand was out of stock. Never again that's for sure!

Doesn't hold it's color anymore
I have been using this hair dye for over a decade becasue it used to be the only red hair dye you could easily buy at the drug store that didn't fade after 2 weeks. Sadly, they must have reformulated and that is no longer the case. Now I have to look for new hair color again.

Love this product!
This hair dye is amazing! I am a complete rookie when it comes to dyeing my hair. My hair was dyed and highlighted by my hair stylist, but I wanted to move to dyeing it myself to save money. I was thrilled to find this as it's not tested on animals and doesn't contain animal products. I did zero research on how to dye your own hair and just picked up a colour off the shelf. I have some natural brown hair, lots of white and grey, and lots of dyed hair. This product blended beautifully! It left my hair soft and healthy looking as well. I felt the first colour I tried wasn't quite right so I tried another and then this one. Each time it has just blended beautifully and my risky experimenting has worked out well! I've finally found the colour that is the right fit for me and I'm so pleased to be able to use this product and save so much money. The one improvement Garnier could make is add to the box what the colour will look like on grey and white hair. :)

Where the purple
As I was making it was more red. After washing out i can tell more red. After see more views an pictures. Im not seeing purple as shown on box. Same reviews say same things. Not a bad color only give it 2 stars cause it not purple as told on box. No where near.

violet is a lie
I generally love Garnier hair dye, but I have to echo other's comments that the violet color is a joke. I have never dyed my hair with such a disperate outcome from the box, and that is saying something. It is just dark red.

Not purple.
This turned my hair a raspberry color. Would have been cute it if it was what I was going for. The hair dye does work. It did change my hair color. It’s like any of the blue pigment that should be in there, is completely absent. Value is decent, but upsetting in that it feels almost like false advertising.

What you are experiencing actually comes down to a fascinating bit of color theory and how hair dye works on dark hair! Because blue pigments naturally mix with natural yellow/orange undertones to create green, our blue hair dyes are formulated with a violet-red base to prevent your hair from turning green. When our "high-lift" formula lifts your dark hair to let the color in, it exposes your hair's natural warm, red-orange undertones. When that newly exposed red mixes with the blue dye, Blue + Red = Purple. Because your hair naturally holds onto those warm red pigments so strongly, the blue got neutralized, leaving you with that vibrant raspberry look!
