Q: Does this Dyson model vacuum shag carpeting? I tried the V15 model and it did not. It was amazing on hard surface flooring but when I tried it on carpeting with a thick pile, it did not work.

Doesn’t knock my socks off for the price
When I ordered this vacuum I thought I ordered the v15? I don’t understand how I made a mistake but this one came and I used it. The positive is I love the light to see the dust you don’t otherwise see, scary…lol It’s pretty light, no button to hold while I vacuum everywhere. And as I have arthritis essential for me. Looks nice not that that’s a selling point to me, but it never hurts, it leaves my carpets with ice lines lol Negative… expensive, you have to change heads from hard floor to carpets, and that is hard as my fingers are twisting and it’s not easy for me. It doesn’t sterilise like the V15 which was what I wanted… Overall if I was going to buy again, I wouldn’t go with this model. That’s me personally..

A difference you can see
We bought this in the Black Friday sales. The light is both helpful and disturbing at the same time - good to see the difference the vacuum makes. Prefer the option of a ‘trigger’ power button as enables you to vacuum one handed. Sometimes it still pushes items around the floor rather than vacuuming.

Satisfactory
I bought this a few days ago and it’s not as powerful as I had thought and read. Hair on the carpet don’t get picked up. Also it doesn’t run on silk carpets and gets stuck. Hardwood floors are easy to clean.

Absolutely fantastic machine!
Holy cow this is quite an upgrade from the V15, which I thought would be a heavy lift, but they did it again. Super powerful and I love the new design with the attachments built into the main wand. Great idea! It's a bit heavier than the previous model, but that doesn't bother me. I also like how there's no more trigger that you need to constantly press while vacuuming, which I got used to, but these controls are better. It looks better, it feels better, and the hard surface roller with the laser works even better than on the V15. It's brighter so you can really spot the debris on the floor better. About the same loudness, the battery lasts way longer than we need, even when we vacuum the entire house at once. Plus, I am big on air filtration and I really appreciate the HEPA filter. Great job, Dyson! But where on earth can you go from here??

The vacuum itself is good but as it is a little heavier the mounting bracket to wall is insufficient for weight. The mounting plate could not be removed and required Dyson to send replacement within the 1st week. This is really not good enough for an expensive vacuum cleaner and expect better engineering for basics

Delighted I stepped up to the Gen 5. Sale price was amazing. Only problem is that I see how dirty my floors are! Green light is a fantastic addition to the vacuum.

Poor battery life

Every bit as good as I had heard. The suction is amazing. I really can't believe it is battery powered. The Dyson goes toe to toe with plug in vacuums. I was also impressed with how quiet this vacuum is. The hard floor attachment is actually very good at picking everything up and the laser light in which I originally thought was kind of gimmicky is actually very helpful if not almost fun. I also didn't think the technology to stop the hair from tangling around the beater bar would really work, but I have to admit, I almost get NO hair wrapped around the bar. Very impressive. Last I thought the vacuum was a little pricey but I waited until black Friday and saved hundreds, therefore bringing the price and value in line with each other. After a couple weeks of use now I am very happy I bought this remarkable vacuum. 5⭐

Powerful machine
Very happy with the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute. We purchased to replace our old Dyson handheld machine. Massive difference. The battery life on auto mode is fantastic, about 45 minutes. The display on the machine tells you everything you need to know and is easy to navigate. Suction is really good and is adjustable however we mainly leave it on auto and let the machine choose the suction based on the dirt it is sucking up. We also have a standard corded Dyson machine and to be honest this machine replaces that. I can't really see us using the corded machine. It is quite a bit heavier than the older cordless machines so if you are weak or elderly it could be an issue. The provided attachments are useful and you can also buy extras however the ones provided should be sufficient which includes a carpet head, hair head and a couple of others. Despite the extra weight, maneuverability is good and the air coming from the machine is clean with the filtration. All in all I highly recommend it.

Gen5 Absolute - A real Gem
I bought this under a month ago and I'm delighted with the vacuum. I'm so glad I got the Gen5 Absolute. It lasts well, has great suction, and the motor bar cleaner head does not get clogged with hair, due to the de-tangling vanes - Essential feature for ease of use. I enjoy the fluffy optic cleaner head too, and thought the blade of light was a bit gimmicky, but alas I actually find it really helpful to know where the dust and crumbs are in the kitchen. Battery last around 20-25 minutes on Auto setting, which I use it on this setting all the time. Filtration is excellent, and find emptying the dust bin easy. Two to three swipes of the ejection mechanism and the dust and hair is gone. There might be a stray hair that gets stuck here and there, but easily cleared with your finger. Easy to manoeuvre despite it being a heavier unit due to size and power (no regrets), and I love not having to hold a trigger, with the on/off button much easier for my preference. The hair screw tool is great for rugs and and mats. The in-built crevice with brush tool is handy, albeit the brush bristles are a little short, but I understand why because it's garaged within the shaft. Overall, highly recommend this larger unit, especially for the suction power, which is outstanding; so much so I'm selling my electric vacuum!
