I've always used a mixture of either Mrs. Meyers, or Mrs. Meyers and 1/4 cup bleach (never bleaches my carpet, only santizes it) and I've used even laudry soap and bleach (small amounts of each) and have had exceptional results. I think they want you to use the Hoover brand cleaners for obvious reasons, but I've always used other methods when I ran out of the cleaner that comes with the machine. If your uneasy about the bleach mixture try a little on a small patch first. But I've always put about a 1/4 cup in my full water tank to sanitize my carpet. Love it.

I purchased the cleaner back in September, but pulled it out the box last week and it does not work. After some research, I found this not uncommon for this model. Now I'm stuck with a cleaner I saved up for and does not work. I can't find my receipt.

Love this Carpet Cleaner!
I've owned this cleaner for a couple of years now. It's fantastic! It's really easy to use and clean. It does a great job on my old carpet. I've also used the attachments to clean my sofa, and I was very impressed with the results! I highly recommend this cleaner!

Just purchased so keep that in mind! So far LOVE it! Cleaned a small section and was absolutely shocked at how much came up - GROSS! Hoover Smart Wash is a piece of junk. It never remove the stains and the suction tank does not work. Also, when I contacted Hoover for the warranty trying to get help they said sorry we cannot help you. This is a brand new machine by the way only used once and found out it does not work.

The best carpet cleaner I’ve had so far! I was in a pinch to get a carpet cleaner as we just moved into a new house with carpet upstairs and I got rid of our old one before we moved. This thing is amazing! The smart feature to wash while going forward but drying going back is the feature I didn’t know I needed but now can’t imagine using without! There’s also a dry only option which helps to preserve the solution and water so you can just go over what you’ve done to help dry faster. I always hated how long my rugs took to dry after washing one but now it’s dry within the hour! I definitely recommend this if you’re looking for a carpet cleaner!
