A Premium Appliance That Can’t Be Opened
I’m genuinely frustrated writing this because I loved this toaster while it worked. It toasted evenly, looked beautiful on the counter, and felt like a “buy once, enjoy for years” kind of appliance. Unfortunately, the plunger mechanism stopped engaging and latching, which should be a simple mechanical repair. That’s when the real disappointment started. For a premium, high-end brand like Breville, it’s shocking that the product appears to be deliberately designed to be unrepairable. After removing every visible screw, the housing still couldn’t be opened because of proprietary twist-lock fasteners and security “hex-star” screws with inner pins that prevent standard tools from fully engaging. Two of the screws even warped almost immediately, making disassembly essentially impossible without damaging the unit. So now, instead of making a straightforward fix, the only realistic option is to throw an otherwise well-built toaster in the garbage. That feels wasteful, environmentally irresponsible, and honestly pretty cynical from a company that markets itself as premium and thoughtfully engineered. Consumers spending top dollar shouldn’t be forced into a disposable-appliance cycle. I expected durability and not a product that becomes landfill over a minor mechanical failure. Really disappointing experience from a brand I previously trusted.

Disappointed
The sole criterion I have for a toaster is that it centers whatever is put in it, so it toasts evenly. I was encouraged by the description for this toaster. Alas, it is like every other toaster in that the springs are shaped like this: / \ instead of this: | | Thus, only the top is centred, and the bottom can (and usually does) flop to either side, burning it on one side and under toasting it on the other. Profoundly disappointed. WHY CAN'T ANY TOASTER MAKER FIGURE THIS OUT???

Overpriced / Uneven toasting / chemical smell
This toaster never lost the weird smell it makes when it’s brand new. Even after a full year, I have to smell that gross plastic chemical smell every time I use it. The bagel button makes WORSE bagels than just using the regular setting (?!?!). The slots aren’t long enough for some types of bread. The “a bit more” button is useful but not as impressive as it could be if the toaster actually did its job. I’m so disappointed that I paid so much for this and then missed the return window. I thought since it’s Breville that it would be good, so I didn’t open it for a couple of months. Do yourself a favor and don’t buy this toaster.

Disapointed in purchase
We replaced our old "a bit more" toaster with this new purchase, and we are disappointed. Brand new toaster and it only toasts on one side of the bread. So we have to flip the bread around and use the bit more feature to get the other side browned.

Hate the plug!
So far it works ok but this is the second Breville we’ve tried only to find out they ALL have this dumb intrusive black plug. Had to buy a separate outlet to hide the Breville one. Would have kept the automatic toasting one but not with the ugly plug at that high price …so trying this one. Plug NOT an improvement.

If you only want one side toasted, this is for you!
Reading so many other reviews describing the toaster only heating one side, I guess that is intentional on Breville's part. I guess I'll use the bagel button every time.

1 sided toaster
I had a previous Breville toaster for the past 13 years and loved it until it recently died. Purchased this new Breville hoping for the same great quality. Build quality seems good. The problem is the outer most heating elements barely heat with the result being one side toasted and the other side only warmed. I tried both slots with the same result. This one is going back and on to another brand of toaster for me.

We've had this amazing toaster for a couple weeks, and I really like its features and how it toasts the bread. I like having the chime when the toast is done, as it allows me to empty the dishwasher and not wonder if the toast is done! I have recommended this toaster to both my sisters. (unfortunately, the toasters are backordered.)

Bad quality, stopped working after warranty expired
I am sad to report that this toaster worked properly only for two years. Now it toasts bread only on one side. The warranty is good only for one year. So unfortunately it was a waste of money. $10 toaster lasts longer.

Good for 2 years.
I really have liked using this toaster about once a week for the past 2 years and 4 months but I am disappointed today because the knob that allows you to choose darkness broke off. We can't see a way to fix it and it's not very usable in this condition. So maybe I should shop for a cheaper toaster?

Uneven browning
One side of the bread toasts and the other is pale. Support told me it was designed this was so you can butter the bread. ARG. The inner element doesn't even light up unless the setting is on bagel. If you want to babysit your toast and flip it, this is the model for you. After sending photos to support (including having to make a piece of toast to show this picture!), and a lot of being annoyed, support will send out a new one. I very much hope a new toaster resolves this issue.

I’d like to meet the engineer who designed this toaster.
I purchased this toaster approximately 2 years ago. I paid 3 times the price I normally pay for toasters. First time using, I could not retrieve the toast. It was sunk so low in the center that I had to hold it upside down to get it out. This creates a huge mess of crumbs everywhere. Did someone not test this design? It took me weeks to find an appropriate tong (small enough and not 100% metal) to retrieve my toast, without said mess. The footprint of this toaster is ginormous on my counter. If it’s going to claim so much real estate, it should provide excellent functionality. I regret the purchase. I would never recommend this toaster to anyone. Perhaps Breville should stick to blenders only!
